English II Summer Reading
(All projects are due by the first full Friday of the school year.)
Each student must choose one of the following novels:
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Option 1:
Type a 5-7 sentence paragraph (per each bullet point) explaining each of the following literary concepts as it pertains to the novel you chose from the above selections:
Setting - Explain the setting and how it is important to the plot.
Theme- What is the message the author is trying to convey?
Exposition- This is where the author sets the stage. The major players are generally introduced and the scene is set. Write a paragraph explaining the exposition.
Rising Action- The author really gets into the main conflict of the story. Explain this conflict.
Climax- This is the where the conflict comes to a boiling point. Explain the situation.
Falling Action/Resolution- What is the outcome? How is the conflict resolved? What happens next?
Option 2:
Design a cover for your book. It may not duplicate the original cover. Your cover should be the size of ½ of a posterboard. It should include the title and the author. It should be creative and tidy. I should be able to tell effort and thought went into the cover. Type a one page essay (double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman) detailing the theme of the story and explain how the author conveyed the message throughout the novel.
Chart the plot. Create a plot chart with a one or two sentence explanation of the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Be creative in your presentation of the plot.
