ENGLISH III


2019 English III Summer Reading 
All projects are due the first full Friday of school. 


Each English III student must choose one of the following American novels: 

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
The Color Purple by Alice Walker (Content Warning! This novel contains strong adult themes.)
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Option 1: 
You must present the major literary components of the novel on a tri-fold board. The appearance of the board should be neat and well-organized. 

You must include the following items: 

Setting: An illustration that represents the main setting of the book. Explain why the setting is important to the novel. If the setting is not important, please explain why it is not important to the story. 

Theme: Explain the central theme of the story. 

Plot Chart: In a creative way, track the plot chart (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)

Symbols: Identify three symbols in the story. Illustrate each symbol and explain its importance to the story. 

Protagonist/Antagonist: Explain the central conflict in the story. 

Summary: Type a three-four paragraph summary of the plot. 

Character Development: Choose an important character in the novel. Describe the growth the character experiences through the events of the novel. 

Three Elements of Your Choice:  Include three extra bits of information from the novel. This can be a recap of a favorite scene, you could include several new vocabulary words you learned while reading, ect. Be creative. Decorate this board to represent the novel.

Option 2: 

Write a prologue and an epilogue to the story. Each element should be two typed pages. (A total of four pages double-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman) . If the story already includes these elements, make sure yours is original and unique. Elements of the story and characters should be apparent in your writing. Include the setting, protagonist/antagonist, theme, and main conflict.
